City of Belvidere  Building & Zoning Department

The City of Belvidere has established a new building department, effective February 22, 2002. All Building & Zoning Permits and inspections for projects within the Belvidere City limits will be handled through this new office.

The Building Department enforces, among other things, the City of Belvidere's Building Code, the City's Zoning Code and the City's Property Maintenance Code.  You may review each of these codes by clicking here.  Portions of the Building Code and Property Maintenance Code are only available for review at the Building Department.

NEW STATE LAW WILL REQUIRES CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM DETECTORS

 

The "Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act" is a new state law that will go into effect on January 1, 2007.  It will require all residences (Single family & Multi family dwelling units) to have carbon monoxide detectors installed. The law applies to both new and existing properties with few exceptions.

Carbon monoxide detectors need to be installed within 15 feet of each bedroom and may be DC battery, AC plug in with battery back up, or AC hard wired with battery back up. For the full text of the Act, click the link below:

    Promote the construction and maintenance of safe buildings for the people entering or occupying buildings in the City of Belvidere, through the enforcement, by qualified staff, of the 2003 International Building Code and related codes that have been recognized by the State of Illinois and adopted by the City of Belvidere as accepted practices and building codes.


      The City of Belvidere Building Department would like to remind you that before starting your summer building projects you should call 815-547-7177 to find out if a building permit is required.  Building Permits are issued by appointment only.  Please call first and make an appointment to get your building permit.  Some of the projects that could require permits are as follows:
  • Fences
  • Swimming Pools
  • Garages
  • Roofs
  • Decks
  • Porches
  • Wiring
  • Siding
  • Windows
  • Remodeling
  • Additions
  • Central Air Conditioning
  • Plumbing
      Please call your local Building Department with your questions.  Our office is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Questions regarding the City of Belvidere's building or zoning codes should be directed to this office.

The Belvidere Department of Public Works would like to remind you that a permit is required prior to doing any work on public right-of-way.  Some types of work requiring a permit include the following:
  • Sidewalk Installation or Replacement
  • Curb Cuts or Repairs
  • Water or Sewer Line Installation or Repairs
  • Driveway Approach Installation
  • Landscaping or Tree Planting
      Please call the Public Works Department at 544-9256 if you have any questions.  Their office is located at 401 Whitney Boulevard, Suite 200 and is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
